New E-Newspaper Reader Echoes Look of the Paper

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The electronic newspaper, a large portable screen that is constantly updated with the latest news, has been a prop in science fiction for ages. It also figures in the dreams of newspaper publishers struggling with rising production and delivery costs, lower circulation and decreased ad revenue from their paper product.

While the dream device remains on the drawing board, Plastic Logic will introduce publicly on Monday its version of an electronic newspaper reader: a lightweight plastic screen that mimics the look — but not the feel — of a printed newspaper.

The device, which is unnamed, uses the same technology as the Sony eReader and Amazon.com’s Kindle, a highly legible black-and-white display developed by the E Ink Corporation. While both of those devices are intended primarily as book readers, Plastic Logic’s device, which will be shown at an emerging technology trade show in San Diego, has a screen more than twice as large. The size of a piece of copier paper, it can be continually updated via a wireless link, and can store and display hundreds of pages of newspapers, books and documents.

Richard Archuleta, the chief executive of Plastic Logic, said the display was big enough to provide a newspaperlike layout. “Even though we have positioned this for business documents, newspapers is what everyone asks for,” Mr. Archuleta said.

The reader will go on sale in the first half of next year. Plastic Logic will not announce which news organization will display its articles on it until the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January, when it will also reveal the price.

Kenneth A. Bronfin, president of Hearst Interactive Media, said, “We are hopeful that we will be able to distribute our newspaper content on a new generation of larger devices sometime next year.” While he would not say what device the company’s papers would use, he said, “we have a very strong interest in e-newspapers. We’re very anxious to get involved.”

The Hearst Corporation, the parent of Hearst Interactive Media, owns 16 daily newspapers, including The Houston Chronicle, The San Antonio Express and The San Francisco Chronicle, and was an early investor in E Ink. The company already distributes electronic versions of some papers on the Amazon Kindle.

Newspaper companies have watched the technology closely for years. The ideal format, a flexible display that could be rolled or folded like a newspaper, is still years off, says E Ink. But it foresees color displays with moving images and interactive clickable advertising coming in only a few more years, according to Sriram K. Peruvemba, vice president for marketing for E Ink.

E Ink expects that within the next few years it will be able to create technology that allows users to write on the screen and view videos. At a recent demonstration at E Ink’s headquarters here, the company showed prototypes of flexible displays that can create rudimentary colors and animated images. “By 2010, we will have a production version of a display that offers newspaperlike color,” Mr. Peruvemba said.

If e-newspapers take off, the savings could be hefty. At the The San Francisco Chronicle, for example, print and delivery amount to 65 percent of the paper’s fixed expenses, Mr. Bronfin said.

With electronic readers, publishers would also learn more about its readers. With paper copy subscriptions, newspapers know what address has received a copy and not much else. About those customers picking up a copy on the newsstand, they know nothing.

As an electronic device, newspapers can determine who is reading their paper, and even which articles are being read. Advertisers would be able to understand their audience and direct advertising to its likeliest customers.

While this raises privacy concerns, “these are future possibilities which we will explore,” said Hans Brons, chief executive of iRex Technologies in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.

IRex markets the iLiad, an 8.5 by 6.1-inch electronic reader that can be used to receive electronic versions of the newspaper Les Echos in France and NRC Handelsblad in the Netherlands.

The iRex, Kindle and eReader prove the technology works. The big question for newspaper companies is how much people will pay for a device and the newspaper subscription for it.

Papers face a tough competitor: their own Web sites, where the information is free. And they have trained a generation of new readers to expect free news. In Holland, the iLiad comes with a one-year subscription for 599 euros ($855). The cost of each additional year of the paper is 189 euros ($270). NRC offers just one electronic edition of the paper a day, while Les Echos updates its iRex version 10 times a day.

A number of newspapers, including The New York Times, offer electronic versions through the Kindle device; The Times on the Kindle costs $14 a month, similar to the cost of other papers. “The New York Times Web site started as a replica of print, but it has now evolved,” said Michael Zimbalist, vice president for research and development operations at The New York Times Company. “We expect to experiment on all of these platforms. When devices start approximating the look and feel of a newspaper, we’ll be there as well,” Mr. Zimbalist said.

Most electronic reading devices use E Ink’s technology to create an image. Unlike liquid-crystal display of computer monitors and televisions, electronic paper technology does not need a backlight, remains displayed even when the power source runs down, and looks brighter, not dimmer, in strong light. It also draws little power from the device’s battery.

Plastic Logic’s first display, while offering a screen size that is 2.5 times larger than the Kindle, weighs just two ounces more and is about one-third the Kindle’s thickness.

It uses a flexible, lightweight plastic, rather than glass, a technology first developed at Cambridge University in England. Plastic Logic, based in Mountain View, Calif., was spun off from that project.

Farrah Fawcett died

LOS ANGELES: Actress Farrah Fawcett, best known for her role in television series “Charlie’s Angels”, died on Thursday. She was 62.
Fawcett died in hospital in Los Angeles surrounded by friends and family following a three-year battle with cancer.

Speculation that Fawcett’s death was close at hand had mounted the previous day after veteran ABC television interviewer Barbara Walters said the actress had been given her last rites. Walters made the disclosure in comments to the “Good Morning America” breakfast television show.

“I’m not sure if she’s going to make it through the day,” Walters said. “She’s had her last rites.” Walters said close family and friends, including long-time companion Ryan O’Neal, were gathering at Fawcett’s hospital bedside in Los Angeles.

“All he wants to do is be with her,” Walters said of O’Neal.

Earlier this week it was revealed that O’Neal planned to marry Fawcett, who had been battling cancer for three years.

“I’ve asked her to marry me, again, and she’s agreed,” an emotional O’Neal told Walters. O’Neal, 68, and Fawcett had been romantically involved off-and-on since 1982. The couple had a son together but never married.—AFP

Communication - The Workplace Equalizer

The skill of communication, in the workplace, or elsewhere, is one of the most valuable skills you can have. Great communication in the workplace on your part can level the playing field and give you a leg up in your organization.

Listen Well

Communication in the workplace is a 2 way street. What many people fail to realize is that the skill of listening is every bit as important, if not more important, than speaking, in the overall context of workplace communication.

Although on the surface this may seem counter intuitive, when you think about it, it makes perfect sense. To start with, most people, especially managers and supervisors, do not enjoy getting the sense that they are not being listened to. Besides, who ever you are communicating with, if you have not listened effectively, you will be unable to respond appropriately when you do speak. This is huge, because when you open your mouth in the workplace, your skills, knowledge, competency are all on display for both peers and management to see.

Speak Effectively

This does not necessarily translate to speaking often or in excess. Speaking "too much" in the workplace can work against you by making it appear that your messages are not relevant or appropriate, and can simply annoy coworkers and management. If you did a good job of listening, you will speak to the issue at hand, and not more or less than what is required.

Or, if you lack necessary information or experience to address the issue, you can verbalize that until you get the appropriate level of support, and can continue the dialog. Either way, when you do speak, make it clear, concise, and on point. This is key to effective communication in the workplace.

Share

Beyond the back and fourth transfer of information that we commonly associate with communication in the workplace, remember to share any ideas you have that can improve a process or trim time from production. Any idea or suggestion that you can contribute that will have a positive net effect on your projects and organization stands a very good chance of standing out in the eyes of management - and being rewarded with advancement.

Adapt

Remember that in the workplace, there are many different possible styles of communication. Some people are highly logical and verbose, while others are visual learners. Some do best with the written word, while others only seem to "get it" when it is explained verbally. Some are like Sgt. Friday on Dragnet, who always said "Just the facts, Ma'am."

Don't overload the visual learner with a 200 page written manual. Don't talk a point to death when speaking to your tech guru who simply needs to know what parameters to include in programming routine. Adapt your communication style in the workplace, to fit your audience, including your audience-of-one in personal communications.

Play Well With Others

A core, basic skill that we begin to learn in Kindergarten and it applies every bit as much to the workplace. The fact that you are the brightest, best qualified person in your department does not give you the license to be "superior" to everyone on your team - even if it is true. If you adopt that attitude, thinking you can "get away with it" based on your superior value and knowledge, think again. Having an attitude of superiority or entitlement is something skilled leaders and managers will tune-in to this right away, and this attribute is not considered positive or healthy for any organization.

If you truly are "better" (brighter, more experienced, and better skilled) then make that superiority an asset to your group. Choose to have the attitude of a coach, mentor, and leader. Contribute your expertise to others that may be struggling in those areas you have mastered. This will add value by reducing inefficiency, as well as demonstrating to management that you have fundamental leadership skills, which is key to advancement.

When you get these core skills right, communication truly is the workplace equalizer, a source of personal power that can propel you to greater heights in your career. And as always, remember to use your new-found power for good.

Changing Corporate Culture - Are Your Messages Consistent?

If we take a systems approach to companies, we will begin to reevaluate the way they are organized to see if they foster the concept of teams. One area that this is especially prevalent is in the way we give out awards and bonuses. Sometimes the very system which we create meaning to award, is the hindrance to creating the outcome we desire.

Case Study

Consider the case of one consulting/systems engineering company. This company has excellent health insurance, retirement benefits, flexible hours, merit pay and bonus systems. The employees are virtually assured of job security. Their bonus program looks great on the books. But, when it is examined deeper, one notices that the way it is run causes decreased productivity rather than greater from middle manager on down. The amount of bonus money the company gives out varies from year to year since the total amount available for distribution is based on the company's total profits. The employees and management that are involved in the most profitable programs are the ones who receive the bonuses. While this appears to be equitable, the company reorganizes frequently, which makes the bonus program very political. The manager who landed a multimillion dollar contract this year, when there was not much bonus money to distribute, may not be working this contract next year when the profit his/her efforts generated are realized. Thus, the person most responsible for the profit may be left out of the bonus distribution. The way this bonus program is set up doesn't encourage middle management to higher productivity or to search for new contracts. It motivates them to stay with contracts they have won and spend time protecting their "kingdom", instead of sharing information and contacts with others in an effort to acquire new contracts for the company. This recognition in the form of bonus, rather than being motivational, encourages territorialism and non-cooperation within and between divisions.

Another Example

A New Jersey Manufacturing co. decided to pay its buyers bonuses if they kept the cost of purchases down. To make that happen, they were relying on second-tier sources and accepting poor-quality materials. The company was in the middle of a very big order, and the fasteners were lousy and ended up costing millions of dollars, while the sourcing department walked away with big bonuses.

In Contrast

In contrast, a participant at a Blanchard seminar uses his "Catch Me Doing Something Right" buttons to boost team spirit. Each person starts out with one button. When an employee sees a coworker doing something right, that employee could take the other's button. The only way the coworker could get another one was to spread the praise to someone else and take his/her button. Peer praising worked to eliminate rivalries and jealousies that often are engendered in an office environment.

A Census Bureau fired 200 people recently rather than allow employees to take proportional work days as they had offered. Management seemed terrified to having the workers cooperate in a crisis and resorted to the in-charge mode of firing.

Need I mention the suffering morale of those remaining? Cases of burnout abound, not because of too much work, but because of the expectancy that our work is to be done in isolation. That we are not members one of another. In the end, we are alone. Work together - but only when I tell you, and in the way that I find suitable. But when push comes to shove, you're all out there alone - it's your individual job that's on the line. Is this what we have come to in our competitive world? I firmly believe that most of us want to work in atmospheres where community support and genuine compassion for each other was the rule rather than the exception. I just think we have gotten off the track.

We tend to separate the real us - the life we have outside the office from that which we are when we are at work. It requires a moment of pause and reflection and some old fashion remembering of time honored words like, "Love one another" or the golden rule "Do unto others and you would have it done to you." I've been fortunate to have never met anyone who basically disagreed with these principles. It's time we put them into practice.

I Love Traffic! Who Knew?

I hail from Chicago, city of almost 3 million, with over 9 million in the Chicago Metropolitan area making it 3rd largest in the US. Along with people comes traffic - lots of it.

Usually I leave the office a little later in order to avoid the "heaviest traffic" but it's still always busy. As of late, I've been breezing home enjoying the open road. The first time it happened I was thrilled. It's not often that there aren't too many cars on the road so when it happens it's an unexpected gift. After a couple of times it hit me. Where are these people? Well, they are home. No job.

With over 25 years in business under my belt, this isn't the first time I've witnessed something bad happening in the economy. There have certainly been interesting times. No matter how many of these that you go through, they are never fun and the strategy is always the same. Stay afloat through it all, plan and come out better in the end. It actually works every-time and this time will be no different. Ask anyone who has been through it before.

Hopefully everyone has already been working on the "stay afloat" part during the course of normal business. This is not something that can be easily put into place now. Everyone's business plan should focus on elements that will keep you going should the world suddenly turn on your strong marketing and sales plans. It has to do with running mean and lean during good as well as bad times. Companies have to be efficient and they have to cultivate a good database. Extravagance presents a very big price. Of course all of the "dead weight" and "low producing" personnel will have to go immediately. Core people must stay. Never get rid of the good ones. It's more expensive long-term to let them go. We will leave it at that.

Business today will consist of loyal customers that you have treated well during the good times and some cherry-picked prospects that you have been classifying so that they are easily accessible now. Hopefully, all of the data that you are working with in your automated system is well categorized and classified. This is extremely important when qualified prospects are lean and you need to target your best options. This will keep us all afloat.

Next is the plan. The one sure thing about the economy is that it will for certain get better at some point. The survivors who have planned for this will benefit most. The worst thing that you can do is only focus on now. Think of the future. Take this time to plan for the future. Gather as much information as possible from solid, qualified applicants. Get as many resumes as possible. This information must be organized and cataloged in the database so that it is accessible fast when the job orders start pouring in. Job orders will pour in because once things get better everyone will want to get back into the swing of things as quickly as possible.

Another part of the plan is to keep in touch and gather information from qualified client prospects. Get the information now, organize it and access it to market to the best prospects later. This is major. On the agenda should be regular contact with these prospects in the form of calls, emails, letters, postcards, etc. Anything that you can do to keep your company in direct contact with the prospect throughout this time will yield huge dividends later. Calls are difficult but power calling is a necessity. You may even dig up a few immediate orders. One of our customers called us about a good candidate a few weeks ago and we hired the candidate within days. Someone is always buying it's just a matter of finding them.

Your automated solution should be able to easily accommodate all of your power marketing with planners, coding, searching and documentation of notes. Import resumes effortlessly with automation so that you can spend time on more urgent matters. Use automation as much as possible to enhance your marketing and sales efforts. If you do not have the proper automation, now is the time to put it into place. Internally, our company is getting all of the "this and that's" in order that we never have time to do when business is pouring in. This is what gives companies the power to take advantage of the opportunities that will present themselves soon. It's a fact that time goes fast.

As painful as these times might be, every strong company comes out better in the end. Weak competitors will shake out and leave more for those that are left. Those that were solid and efficient will survive. Not having job orders is no worse than having too many job orders and too few qualified candidates. Either way you can't fill it. This is why it is really important to work on getting everything in place. It's a terrific time to build and clean up the database, possibly plan on adding new product lines, strategize to capitalize on new opportunities and train internal employees.

Heavy traffic? I can't wait. I love traffic. I'll be ready for it. And so will you.

3 Books Any Business Owner Should Read

hen you're running a business, learning from others can be the best way to ensure continued growth and success. Here are 3 books that every business owner should read.

7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey - One of the best known and best selling books in the business and entrepreneur genre, 7 Habits gives a guide to not only becoming efficient in your work, but also making sure that the work you're doing is important. Taking a "top down" approach to productivity, Covey helps you determine which things on your to-do list are most important, and teaches you how to focus on them.

Getting Things Done by David Allen - In contrast to Covey's big picture approach, David Allen explores the detail level side of productivity. As he puts it, "If you can't get the small things done consistently, the big picture doesn't matter too much." In his book, Allen gives a detailed, specific method of automating your to do list, making sure that nothing falls through the cracks, and shows you exactly how to be sure that everything will get done in a timely fashion.

The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing by Al Ries and Jack Trout - Regardless of what you're selling - whether it's a product, a service or just your image - you need to know about these 22 laws. The authors show how to work with the marketplace when you're selling, by learning what your customers are thinking, rather than trying to go against the flow. As they put it,"violate [these laws} at your own risk!"

Numb - Linkin Park

I'm tired of being what you want me to be
Feeling so faithless lost under the surface
Don't know what you're expecting of me
Put under the pressure of walking in your shoes
(Caught in the undertow just caught in the undertow)
Every step that I take is another mistake to you
(Caught in the undertow just caught in the undertow)

[Chorus]
I've become so numb I can't feel you there
Become so tired so much more aware
I'm becoming this all I want to do
Is be more like me and be less like you

Can't you see that you're smothering me
Holding too tightly afraid to lose control
Cause everything that you thought I would be
Has fallen apart right in front of you
(Caught in the undertow just caught in the undertow)
Every step that I take is another mistake to you
(Caught in the undertow just caught in the undertow)
And every second I waste is more than I can take

[Chorus]
I've become so numb I can't feel you there
Become so tired so much more aware
I'm becoming this all I want to do
Is be more like me and be less like you

And I know
I may end up failing too
But I know
You were just like me with someone disappointed in you

[Chorus]
I've become so numb I can't feel you there
Become so tired so much more aware
I'm becoming this all I want to do
Is be more like me and be less like you

[Chorus]
I've become so numb I can't feel you there
I'm tired of being what you want me to be
I've become so numb I can't feel you there
I'm tired of being what you want me to be

Ego (featuring Kanye West) - Beyonce

I got a big ego, (hahaha)
I’m such a big ego, (hahaha)
I got a big, (hahaha), Ego,
She love my big, (hahaha), Ego,
So stroke my big, (hahaha), Ego,
I like to joke around a little bit but here we go,
Welcome to the wonderful world,
Of go play the earl coz,
Everything I throw up, blow up,
Talking to the girl,
She said, know what, grow up,
You nasty,
I don’t understand why they trippin’,
If you ask me,
Flow is just as nice as,
I admit the propane,
I just spit, probably,
Just raise the gas prices,
Everybody in the club,
Try and get as fresh as me,
What you want dog,
Trying to stay recession free,
And spit, refreshly,
When I rock the stadium,
You probably get sweaty,
You should bring a extra tee,
Now I’m standing next to Jay,
Who standing next to B,
You coulda been anywhere in the world,
But you’re here with me,
That’s good for ego,
Me and my ego,
And it go wherever we go,
My ego is my imaginary friend,
He was with me when I was only imagining,
I had dreams of the league,
On day I play Coby,
I walk up the puff and he already know me,
Coulda let the dream killers, kill my self esteem,
Or use the arrogance as a steam that power my dreams,
And my ego,

It's on baby, let's get lost,
You don't need to call into work 'cause you're the boss,
For real, want you to show me how you feel,
I consider myself lucky, that's a big deal,
Why? Well, you got the key to my heart,
But you ain't gonna need it, I'd rather you open up my body,
And show me secrets, you didn't know was inside,
No need for me to lie,

It's too big, it's too wide,
It's too strong, it won't fit,
It's too much, it's too tough,
He talk like this 'cause he can back it up,
He got a big ego, such a huge ego,
I love his big ego, it's too much,
He walk like this 'cause he can back it up,

Usually I'm humble, right now I don't choose,
You can leave with me or you could have the blues,
Some call it arrogant, I call it confident,
You decide when you find on what I'm working with,
Damn I know I'm killing you with them legs,
Better yet them thighs,
Matter a fact it's my smile or maybe my eyes,
Boy you a site to see, kind of something like me,

It's too big, it's too wide,
It's too strong, it won't fit,
It's too much, it's too tough,
I talk like this 'cause I can back it up,
I got a big ego, such a huge ego,
But he love my big ego, it's too much,
I walk like this 'cause I can back it up,

It's too big, it's too wide,
It's too strong, it won't fit,
It's too much, it's too tough,
He talk like this 'cause he can back it up,
He got a big ego, such a huge ego,
I love his big ego, it's too much,
He walk like this 'cause he can back it up,

Ego so big, you must admit,
I got every reason to feel like I'm that bitch,
Ego so strong, if you ain't know,
I don't need no beat, I can sing it with piano.

Papa, paparazzi
Baby, there’s no other superstar, you know that I’ll be
Your papa, paparazzi

Promise I’ll be kind

But I won’t stop until that boy is mine
Baby, you’ll be famous, chase you down until you love me

Human Swine Influenza 2009

Have you already heard about human swine flu? It seems to be a new epidemic or even
the worst influenza after the bird flu. The outbreak is really tough and this topic
is widely spoken about. Frankly speaking, it looks a bit unbelievable but nevertheless
– knowledge is power and we’d better know some facts about the following disaster.

Human Swine Influenza 2009

What Is Swine Flu?

The swine flu is a strain of virus, most likely that nowadays we deal with the H1N1 strain, which can be passed from
pigs to human beings. The virus was identified in pigs in 1930.

Unfortunately, the way of transmitting is as easy as ABC – the virus is transmitted
person-to-person contact, also by touching something someone with a virus, also
this infection is an airborne one.

Human Swine Influenza 2009

Symptoms are the same as typical flu symptoms: fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, chills and
fatigue.

It is really awful since even those who don’t live in Mexico, and even those who live very far from it are in danger. The disease is extremely catching and contagious and it spreads like a wildfire. The saddest part, even young and healthy people are prone to this virus.

Human Swine Influenza 2009

So it is better to avoid travels these days (especially to Mexico and the USA).
